Welcome to my portfolio.
RÖKI,
An adventure game inspired by Scandinavian folklore; a dark contemporary fairy tale with a touching narrative, ancient puzzles and atmospheric exploration.
In my studies of asset development, I was tasked in working in a team to create a scene in the style of Röki, by Polygon Treehouse. I worked in a team of 4 as an Environment Artist, working to make sure that everyone's props fit the creative narrative and style of the game, while constructing a custom woodland environment.
Concept Art
A critical step of our assignment was the pre-planning and concept phases. These allowed our team to have a solid idea before we got into any production, so we wouldn't have to worry about changing ideas throughout the project. As you can see, we stuck fairly lose to the concept art, with only a few adjustments. We used Trello and Miro.
Real World Influence
Real world influence through reference photos were acritical piece of this project, and our team spent the first week finding photos from out environment. Moss, planks, and foliage were our main interests, as these are the things we wanted to recreate in our scene. Some elements, like Cloudberries, were not local, so we took to the internet for reference photos of more fantastical elements.
Nanna's Shop
Inspired by herbalism and druidic magic in the world of Roki, Nanna is an older character who lives in a hollowed out log, and serves as a story area where the player can acquire quests and items related to their size. By shrinking down using Nanna's home-brewed potions, more areas of the game would be unlocked.
My team, Jellyfish games, wanted to create a magical environment with an earthy and neutral color scheme.
My Models
Environmental Storytelling
Working as an Environment Artist, It was my job to make sure that the props tell a coherent narrative, and give the character a place to be grounded in the Roki universe. The main plot notes we wanted to hit were that of magic, Nanna being a shop keep, and Nanna being a survivalist-esque hoarder. By integrating props like fairy bottles and cauldrons into the scene, it gives Nanna mystical wares to sell while making use of her environment for ingredients.
